Poem reads:
Wild Lake
It is easy on a calm August day
to survey the breadth of your still expanse
and see you as peaceful, easily
contained.
But you were born
of glacial flooding, overtaking
a valley, then retreating to reveal
dunes your waves still shape.
In March, your water
encroaches on the parking lot
at the public beach, threatening
to swallow the lighthouse.
Perhaps you aren’t encroaching
at all, rather retrieving
what we’ve spent all our resources
to own.
Perhaps we are the ones
who have trespassed.
You contain a history
of ebb and flow,
yet we imagine
you can somehow be restrained,
that your surface level advances
can be fought with sandbags
and seawalls. The beach disappears,
the bluff beneath the staircase erodes,
we condemn the power
that made you Great.
